About the EcoPerspectives and The Beacon Blogs

EcoPerspectives is an environmental law-focused blog discussing current developments in environmental law, proposals to achieve more environmentally-friendly outcomes, and unique perspectives on environmental concerns impacting the global world we all live in.

The Beacon is an environmental justice-focused blog discussing current developments in the law, proposals to achieve more just actions to those disproportionately affected by environmental impacts, and those leading the movements to trailblaze an environmentally just future. The Beacon is further divided into three subcategories: Consider It Briefed, Trail Notes, and Between the Lines.

    • Consider It Briefed: providing essential information about specific environmental justice issues.
    • Trail Notes: reporting on the career trajectories of environmental justice leaders and students.
    • Between the Lines: reporting on the experiences of people in the environmental justice movement.

The blogs have two primary groups of authors: VJEL Staff and outside submissions. Every year, VJEL Staff write blog posts on their chosen topic in environmental law or environmental justice as part of their Staff Editor requirements. In addition, VJEL also accepts submissions from other authors, including students, professors, lawyers, and others interested or within the environmental law field. The views and opinions expressed by authors are not necessarily the official views of the Vermont Journal of Environmental Law, nor are they offering any legal advice, advertisements, solicitations, or establishing attorney-client relationships.

See below for submission instructions and guidelines.

How to Submit a Blog for Publication

VJEL is always looking for talented writers with unique perspectives and ideas to feature in both the EcoPerspectives and The Beacon blogs, which publish soon after receiving the piece. Unlike our regular Publications, the blogs are more casual and not revised as rigorously. If you have a topic related to environmental law or environmental justice and want to be featured, please follow the below guidelines:

    • Write an op-ed style piece between 600-1200 words, not counting any headings.
    • Include hyperlinks to the sources used directly in the text (not footnotes).
    • Please include a short blurb summarizing your piece (20-30 words max) and a non-copyright photo to use as the blog thumbnail/header image.
    • Email your piece as a Word Docx to articlesVJEL@vermontlaw.edu and include either “EcoPerspectives” or “The Beacon” in the subject line.
    • If you have any questions or general inquiries about either blog, please Contact Us.

Once VJEL receives your piece, our Staff will determine whether VJEL will publish it. If we decide to publish it, we will contact you with the next steps for publication.
